A global moot competition that celebrates and tests students’ mediation advocacy and mediation skills, the International Mediation Singapore (IMSG) 2021 is a perfect platform to showcase competencies in this field! Seizing this opportunity to sharpen their skills and learn the importance of collaborative dispute resolution, 10 SUSS Law Degree students pitted themselves against competitors from 34 different nations and territories!
Comprising of five rounds, held over two weekends, the teams were tasked to work on case problems based on real international disputes. This year’s team from SUSS included students, Lydia Lee Lidie, Intan Suhaily Binte Abu Bakar, Yeo Yong Chuan, Sebastian Hoe Wee Kiat, Poh Chee Eng, Vincent Low Siew Chua, Lim Xiang, Khairul Anwar Bin Mohamed Norahim, Maria Santosh and Georgina Teo Wei Ting who had little prior experience. Nonetheless, they persevered and strived to prepare themselves for the competition, together with their coaches and SUSS Law lecturers, Mr Melvin Loh and Mr Alvin Cheng.
Team SUSS at the IMSG 2021
In rounds one to four, two teams competed against each other as either the Mediation Advocates or a Mediator. Round five was a multi-party mediation session where three teams competed as Mediation Advocates while the fourth competed as a Mediator. This unique competition format gave participants exposure to a wider range of opposing teams and their differing debate styles.
SUSS team's dedication and hard work coupled with the support from Dominic Wong, Lai Mun Loon and Joseph Tan, SUSS Law Alumni, all of whom participated in last year’s competition, eventually paid off! Despite it only being their second time participating at the IMSG, our students held up a good performance all through the finale and ended the competition with a bang, taking home a total of three gold medals, two silver medals and one bronze medal.
